In order to be eligible for citizenship through naturalization, candidates must meet several requirements that depend, in part, on personal circumstances. Personal Circumstances
- Be a permanent resident for at least five years
- Be a spouse of a U.S. citizen and a permanent resident for three years or less and
- Have qualifying services in the U.S. armed forces
- Be the child of a U.S. citizen

Passing the tests
Civics test
During the citizenship interview, a USCIS officer will ask you a set of 10 civics questions in English, out of which you must answer at least six correctly. The questions are intended to test applicants’ knowledge of general knowledge of U.S. history and government. A typical question might be, “What are the two parts of the U.S. Congress?” The USCIS website has materials to help you prepare for the civics test.
English test
Unless receiving an exemption from the English test, applicants have to demonstrate to a USCIS officer basic competency in English by passing a test. An applicants’ English skills are tested in three ways:
- By reading a sentence in “a manner suggesting to the USCIS officer that you understand the meaning of the sentence”
- By writing one sentence “in a manner that would be understandable as written to the USCIS officer”
- By responding to questions asked by USCIS officers during the naturalization eligibility interview regarding information in your Application for Naturalization
